She is best known for her accomplishments in the sport of gymnastics, having won numerous medals and awards throughout her career. Anita began her gymnastics career at the age of 12, when she joined the New York Turners Gymnastics Club. She quickly rose to prominence in the sport, winning the U.S. National Championships in 1948 and 1949. She also competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, where she placed fourth in the all-around competition. Anita continued to compete in gymnastics until the age of 40, when she retired from the sport. She then went on to become a coach and judge for the sport. She has been inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame and the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame. Anita is currently married to her husband, John Simonis.
