Anne Marie Pohtamo is a Finnish politician and former President of Finland from 2000 to 2006. She was the first female president of Finland and the first female president of any Nordic country. She was also the first president to be elected by direct popular vote. Anne Marie Pohtamo was born in Helsinki, Finland, on 15 August 1955. She studied at the University of Helsinki, where she earned a Master of Laws degree in 1979. She then worked as a lawyer and a civil servant in the Ministry of Justice. In 1987, Pohtamo was elected to the Finnish Parliament, where she served until 2000. During her time in Parliament, she held several ministerial posts, including Minister of Justice, Minister of the Interior, and Minister of Social Affairs and Health. In 2000, Pohtamo was elected President of Finland, becoming the first female president of Finland and the first female president of any Nordic country. She was also the first president to be elected by direct popular vote. During her presidency, Pohtamo focused on promoting gender equality, environmental protection, and international cooperation. She also worked to strengthen Finland's ties with the European Union. After her term as president ended in 2006, Pohtamo returned to her legal practice and has since served as a member of the board of several companies.
