Anthony M. Kennedy is an American lawyer and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1988 until his retirement in 2018. He was nominated to the court by President Ronald Reagan in 1987, and was confirmed by the United States Senate in 1988. Kennedy was born in Sacramento, California, on July 23, 1936. He attended Stanford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1958. He then attended Harvard Law School, where he earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1961. Kennedy began his legal career as a law clerk for California Supreme Court Justice Roger Traynor. He then worked as a private practice attorney in San Francisco and Sacramento. In 1975, he was appointed to the California Supreme Court by Governor Jerry Brown. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan nominated Kennedy to the Supreme Court of the United States. He was confirmed by the United States Senate in 1988, and served on the court until his retirement in 2018. During his tenure, Kennedy was known for his moderate views and his ability to bridge the ideological divide between the court's liberal and conservative justices. Kennedy is widely regarded as one of the most influential Supreme Court justices in history. He authored several landmark opinions, including the 1992 decision in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which reaffirmed the right to abortion established in Roe v. Wade. He also wrote the majority opinion in Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage in the United States.
