Antoine Torbey was a Lebanese politician and diplomat who served as the Prime Minister of Lebanon from 1972 to 1973. He was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on 15 September 1925. He studied law at the University of Paris and graduated in 1949. He began his political career in 1952, when he was elected to the Lebanese Parliament. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1958 to 1960 and as Minister of Justice from 1960 to 1961. He was appointed Prime Minister of Lebanon in 1972 and served until 1973. In addition to his political career, Torbey was also a successful businessman. He was the founder and chairman of the Middle East Airlines, which he established in 1945. He was also the founder and chairman of the Lebanese International Bank, which he established in 1964. Torbey was a strong advocate for peace in the Middle East and was a key figure in the negotiations that led to the signing of the Taif Agreement in 1989. He was also a member of the United Nations Security Council from 1989 to 1990. Torbey passed away on 28 April 2020 at the age of 94. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
