He won a bronze medal in the men's doubles event in 1948. Salvesen began his career as a luger in the 1940s, and competed in the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland. He won a bronze medal in the men's doubles event with his partner, Oddbjørn Hagen. He also competed in the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo, Norway, but did not medal. Salvesen retired from competitive luging in the 1950s, but continued to be involved in the sport as a coach and mentor. He was inducted into the International Luge Federation Hall of Fame in 2002.
