Antonin Scalia was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1986 until his death in 2016. He was appointed to the court by President Ronald Reagan and was the first Italian-American to serve on the Supreme Court. Scalia was known for his conservative views and his originalist interpretation of the Constitution. Scalia was born in Trenton, New Jersey, to an Italian-American family. He attended Xavier High School in Manhattan and then went on to Georgetown University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1957. He then attended Harvard Law School, where he earned his law degree in 1960. After graduating from Harvard, Scalia clerked for Judge Henry Friendly of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He then worked in private practice in Cleveland, Ohio, before joining the faculty of the University of Virginia School of Law in 1967. In 1972, he was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. In 1986, President Reagan nominated Scalia to the Supreme Court. He was confirmed by the Senate and took his seat on the court on September 26, 1986. Scalia served on the court for nearly 30 years, until his death in 2016. During his time on the court, Scalia was known for his conservative views and his originalist interpretation of the Constitution. He was a strong advocate of states' rights and was a vocal opponent of affirmative action and same-sex marriage. Scalia was married to Maureen McCarthy from 1960 until his death in 2016. They had nine children together. Scalia died on February 13, 2016, at the age of 79.
