Antonio Benítez Rojo was a Cuban writer, professor, and literary critic. He was born in Havana, Cuba, on March 14, 1931. He studied at the University of Havana and later at the University of Puerto Rico. He was a professor of Spanish literature at the University of Puerto Rico and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Benítez Rojo was a prolific writer, publishing numerous books, essays, and articles. His works include The Repeating Island: The Caribbean and the Postmodern Perspective (1992), The Golden Age of the Moor (1992), and The Island of Memory: Myth and Identity in the Caribbean (1996). He was also a member of the Cuban Academy of Language. Benítez Rojo died on April 28, 2019, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the age of 88.
