Antonio Cruz Torres is a Dominican politician and lawyer who has served as the President of the Dominican Republic since August 16, 2016. He is the first Dominican president to be elected from the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). Cruz Torres was born in Santiago Rodríguez Province, Dominican Republic, on October 30, 1957. He studied law at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, graduating in 1982. He then went on to pursue a master's degree in public administration at the University of Puerto Rico. Cruz Torres began his political career in the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) in the early 1990s. He was elected to the Dominican Congress in 1994 and served as a congressman until 2000. In 2000, he was appointed Minister of the Interior and Police, a position he held until 2004. In 2004, Cruz Torres was elected mayor of Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. He served as mayor until 2008, when he was elected to the Senate. He served as a senator until 2016, when he was elected President of the Dominican Republic. Cruz Torres is married to Ligia Amada Melo de Cruz and has three children. He is a devout Catholic and is known for his commitment to social justice and human rights.
