Antonio Vivaldi was an Italian Baroque composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher and cleric. He is one of the most famous and influential composers in history. Vivaldi is known mainly for composing instrumental concertos, especially for the violin, as well as sacred choral works and over forty operas. His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons. Vivaldi was born in Venice, then part of the Republic of Venice, and was baptized immediately after his birth at his home by the midwife, which led to a belief that his life was somehow in danger. Though no documentary evidence exists, the family tradition is that Vivaldi had earlier been designated by his father to become a priest. Vivaldi's official church baptism took place two months later. Vivaldi's father, Giovanni Battista Vivaldi, was a barber before becoming a professional violinist. Vivaldi's mother, Camilla Calicchio, was a seamstress. Vivaldi had five siblings: Margarita Gabriela, Cecilia Maria, Bonaventura Tomaso, Zanetta Anna, and Francesco Gaetano. Vivaldi's father taught him to play the violin and then toured Venice playing the violin with his young son. At the age of fifteen, Vivaldi was appointed master of violin at the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children where Vivaldi was to spend most of his life. Vivaldi also studied composition with Benedetto Marcello, a family friend who was the brother of the famous composer Benedetto Marcello. Vivaldi's career spanned four decades, during which he composed over 500 concertos, including The Four Seasons, as well as numerous operas, sacred choral works, and chamber music. He was also a skilled teacher, and many of his students went on to become famous composers. Vivaldi died in Vienna in 1741.
