Aptullah Kuran is a renowned Omani architect and urban planner. He was born on 4 December 1927 in Muscat, Oman. He is the founder of the Aptullah Kuran Architects and Planners, a firm that has designed many iconic buildings in Oman. Kuran studied architecture at the University of Baghdad in Iraq and graduated in 1952. He then worked in the Ministry of Public Works in Iraq before returning to Oman in 1954. He was appointed as the Director of the Department of Public Works in Muscat in 1955. Kuran has designed many iconic buildings in Oman, including the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the Royal Opera House, the National Museum of Oman, and the Sultan Qaboos University. He has also designed many other buildings in the Middle East, including the Kuwait National Assembly Building and the Kuwait International Airport. Kuran has received numerous awards for his work, including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1980, the Order of Oman in 1985, and the Order of Merit from the Sultan of Oman in 2000.
