Artie Butler is an American composer, arranger, and conductor. He is best known for his work on television and film soundtracks, including the theme songs for The Partridge Family, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, and Welcome Back, Kotter. He has also composed music for numerous television shows, including The Love Boat, The Jeffersons, and The Golden Girls. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Butler began playing the piano at the age of five. He attended the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan, and later studied at the Juilliard School of Music. After graduating, he began working as a session musician, playing on records by artists such as Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, and The Monkees. In the 1970s, Butler began composing music for television and film. He wrote the theme songs for The Partridge Family, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, and Welcome Back, Kotter, as well as the music for The Love Boat, The Jeffersons, and The Golden Girls. He has also composed music for films such as Grease, The Muppet Movie, and The Blues Brothers. In addition to his work in television and film, Butler has also composed music for the stage, including the musicals Grease and The Wiz. He has also released several solo albums, including Artie Butler Plays the Hits of the 70s and Artie Butler Plays the Hits of the 80s.
