He stirred huge controversy after being accused of sexually abusing a pet dog which belonged to his girlfriend Adarshaa Karadana. On 23 December 2022, he resigned from his position as Presidential Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs due to personal reasons, in wake of sexual abuse allegations which were levelled against him by his girlfriend Adarshaa Karadana and by politician Hirunika Premachandra. Hirunika revealed a video clip featuring Ashu Marasinghe and the dog. It is believed that Marasinghe could plead guilty to offences under Sri Lanka’s Penal Code and could possibly face up to 20 years in prison. However, Marasinghe refuted the allegations and made a complaint at the Criminal Investigation Department on 24 December 2022 and claimed that the allegations were baseless while also claiming that the video was edited and doctored.
He had spent a two-year relationship with Adarshaa Karadana whom he met via Facebook and started dating her. The couple had lived together for two years under one roof without getting married, a principle which is not quite accepted in a typical conservative Sri Lankan society. It was revealed that the couple had engaged in a toxic relationship as Marasinghe has physically abused Karadana on multiple occasions. Adarshaa Karadana along with Ashu Marasinghe also played a lead role as an activist during the infamous Aragalaya which broke out during the 2022 Sri Lankan protests in response to the 2019–present Sri Lankan economic crisis. However, both stopped from engaging in Aragalaya protests ever since Ranil Wickremasinghe was appointed as the President of Sri Lanka.
Ashu Marasinghe (born 25 May 1971) is a Sri Lankan politician, professor and academic. He served as the former advisor to current Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and also served as a former Member of Parliament of Sri Lanka. He was a national list member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka proposed by United National Front following the 2015 Sri Lankan parliamentary election and subsequently served in the 15th Parliament of Sri Lanka as an MP. He specialised in Computer Engineering.
