Atef Salem was a Sudanese film director, producer, and screenwriter. He was born on 23 July 1927 in Sudan. He was one of the most influential figures in Sudanese cinema, and his films were known for their social and political commentary. He directed over 20 films, including the award-winning feature film "The Night of Counting the Years" (1969). He was also a founding member of the Sudanese Film Group, which was established in 1964. Salem was a prolific filmmaker, and his films often addressed social and political issues in Sudan. He was known for his use of symbolism and allegory in his films, and for his willingness to tackle controversial topics. He was also a strong advocate for the rights of women in Sudan. Salem was awarded the Order of Merit by the Sudanese government in recognition of his contributions to Sudanese cinema. He died in Khartoum in 2009 at the age of 82.
