Augusto Boal was a Brazilian theatre director, writer, and politician. He was the founder of the Theatre of the Oppressed, a theatrical form originally used in radical popular education movements. Boal served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro from 1991 to 2011. Boal was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 16 March 1931. He studied law at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, but left before graduating to pursue a career in theatre. He was a member of the Arena Theatre in Rio de Janeiro from 1956 to 1968, and was its artistic director from 1964 to 1968. In 1971, Boal founded the Theatre of the Oppressed, a form of theatre which uses audience participation and improvisation to explore social and political issues. He wrote several books on the subject, including Games for Actors and Non-Actors (1992) and The Rainbow of Desire (1995). Boal was also a political activist, and served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro from 1991 to 2011. He was a member of the Workers' Party, and was a candidate for the office of Mayor of Rio de Janeiro in 2000. Boal died on 2 May 2009, at the age of 78. He was survived by his wife, Maria-Helena Boal, and their two children.
