She has served as the principal of Rishi Valley School since 2002 and has been instrumental in the school's growth and development. She has also served as a member of the National Advisory Council of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Bir is a recipient of the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, for her contribution to the field of education. She has also been awarded the National Award for Teachers by the Government of India. Bir is married to Dr. Rajeev Bir, a professor of English at the University of Delhi. They have two children.
