She attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where she studied film and television. Benedek is best known for her work on the films The Big Chill (1983), About Last Night (1986), and The Accidental Tourist (1988). She has also written for television, including the series Thirtysomething (1987-1991) and My So-Called Life (1994-1995). Benedek has been nominated for two Academy Awards, for Best Original Screenplay for The Big Chill and Best Adapted Screenplay for The Accidental Tourist. She has also been nominated for two Emmy Awards, for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for Thirtysomething and Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for My So-Called Life.
