She has also written and illustrated her own books, such as "The Magician's Cat" and "The Magician's Dog". Firth has won numerous awards for her work, including the Kate Greenaway Medal in 1971 for "The Magician's Cat". (Walker, ISBN 1844284913), which has been called "as perfect a picture-book as anyone could hope to make". The book was also the overall winner of the 1988 Nestlé Smarties Book Prize.
