Belaid Abdessalam was a prominent Algerian politician and leader of the National Liberation Front (FLN). He was born in Dehamcha, Sétif, French Algeria, on 20 July 1928. He studied law at the University of Algiers and was a member of the FLN from its inception in 1954. He was a member of the National Assembly from 1962 to 1965 and was appointed Minister of Justice in 1965. He was also a member of the Political Bureau of the FLN from 1965 to 1967. Abdessalam was a strong advocate of Algerian independence and was a key figure in the negotiations that led to the Evian Accords in 1962, which ended the Algerian War of Independence. He was also a major proponent of the Arab-Israeli peace process and was a signatory of the Camp David Accords in 1978. Abdessalam died on 28 April 2020 at the age of 92.
