Bella Abzug was an American lawyer, congresswoman, and a leader of the women's movement. She was born in the Bronx, New York, to Jewish immigrant parents. She attended Hunter College High School and graduated from Hunter College in 1945. She then attended Columbia Law School, where she was one of only three women in her class. After graduating from law school, Abzug became a civil rights lawyer and was involved in several landmark cases. She was also a founding member of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and the Women's Strike for Peace. In 1970, Abzug was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first woman to represent New York in Congress. She served three terms in the House, during which she was a vocal advocate for women's rights, civil rights, and environmental protection. In 1977, Abzug co-founded the Women's Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), which works to promote gender equality and environmental sustainability. She also served as a delegate to the United Nations and was a leader in the international women's movement. Bella Abzug died in 1998 at the age of 77. She was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999.
