Benson Wairegi is a Kenyan accountant, business executive, and entrepreneur. He was born in 1953 in Kigumo, Kenya. He is the founder and chairman of the Equity Group Holdings, a financial services provider in East Africa. He is also the chairman of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, a business advocacy organization. Wairegi is a graduate of the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom. Wairegi began his career in the banking sector in 1979, when he joined the National Bank of Kenya. He later moved to the Central Bank of Kenya, where he served as the Deputy Governor from 1994 to 1997. In 1997, he founded Equity Bank, which has since grown to become one of the largest financial services providers in East Africa. Wairegi has been recognized for his business acumen and leadership. In 2011, he was named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for East Africa. He has also been awarded the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya, the highest honor bestowed by the Kenyan government.
