William Charles Ayers is an American elementary education theorist and a former leader in the counterculture movement who opposed US involvement in the Vietnam War. He is known for his 1960s radical activism and his current work in education reform, curriculum and instruction. Ayers was born in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and grew up in the Chicago suburbs. He attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a bachelor's degree in American studies in 1968. He later earned a master's degree in education from Bank Street College of Education in 1971 and a doctorate in education from Columbia University in 1987. Ayers became involved in the New Left and the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) while at Michigan. He rose to national prominence as an SDS leader in the late 1960s. In 1969, he co-founded the Weather Underground, a self-described communist revolutionary group that conducted a campaign of bombing public buildings during the 1970s in response to US involvement in the Vietnam War. After the Weather Underground disbanded in 1977, Ayers became a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has written several books on education theory, including To Teach: The Journey of a Teacher (1993) and Teaching Toward Freedom: Moral Commitment and Ethical Action in the Classroom (2004). He is currently a professor emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
