Bill Evans was an American jazz pianist and composer who was born on August 16, 1929 in Plainfield, New Jersey. He was one of the most influential figures in jazz history, and his music has been widely acclaimed for its harmonic complexity and emotional depth. Evans began playing piano at the age of six and was soon performing in local clubs. He attended Southeastern Louisiana University and then the Mannes College of Music in New York City. He began his professional career in the 1950s, playing with Miles Davis, George Russell, and other jazz greats. In the 1960s, Evans began to develop his own style, which blended elements of classical music with jazz improvisation. He released several albums as a leader, including the classic trio recordings Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby. He also collaborated with other jazz musicians, including saxophonist Stan Getz and bassist Eddie Gomez. Evans was a prolific composer, writing over 50 original compositions. He was also an influential teacher, and his influence can be heard in the work of many jazz pianists. At the age of 64, Bill Evans died of a drug overdose in 1980. He was posthumously inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1981.

Bluegrass group Due West featured Evans, Jim Nunally (guitar), Erik Thomas (mandolin), and Chad Manning (fiddle). Their one album is These Boots released in 2003.

2002

Evans was a member of the bluegrass ensemble Bluegrass Intentions with Suzy Thompson (fiddle, Cajun accordion, vocals), Eric Thompson (mandolin, guitar, vocals), Larry Cohea (bass, vocals), and Alan Senauke (guitar, vocals). They released one album Old as Dirt on Evans's Native and Fine record label in 2002.

The progressive bluegrass band released two albums: A Bluegrass Ensemble in 1983 and Live In Europe in 1985. Their final performance was in Winfield, Kansas in 1985, but Evans still collaborates with individual band members.
