Bingham Ray was an American film producer, executive, and director. He was born on October 1, 1954 in Bronxville, New York. He was the co-founder of October Films, a film distribution company, and was a key figure in the independent film movement of the 1990s. Ray attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied film and graduated in 1976. After college, he worked as a film programmer at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley, and then as a film buyer for the San Francisco-based Landmark Theatres chain. In 1991, Ray co-founded October Films with Jeff Lipsky and John Schmidt. October Films was a film distribution company that specialized in independent films. Ray served as the company's president and CEO until it was sold to USA Films in 1999. Ray was also a producer and executive producer on several films, including "The Brothers McMullen" (1995), "The Spitfire Grill" (1996), "The Apostle" (1997), and "The Big Lebowski" (1998). Ray died on January 23, 2012, at the age of 57, after suffering a stroke. At the time of his death, Ray had an estimated net worth of $10 million. He earned his wealth through his career as a film producer, executive, and director.
