Birute Galdikas is a Canadian anthropologist and primatologist who is best known for her work with orangutans in Borneo. She was born on May 10, 1946 in Wiesbaden, Germany, to Lithuanian parents. She moved to Canada with her family when she was three years old. Galdikas earned her bachelor's degree in anthropology from the University of Alberta in 1969 and her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1975. She was mentored by the famous anthropologist Louis Leakey, who encouraged her to study orangutans in the wild. Galdikas founded the Orangutan Foundation International in 1986 and has since dedicated her life to the study and conservation of orangutans. She has written several books about her work, including Reflections of Eden: My Years with the Orangutans of Borneo (1995) and Beyond the Last Village: A Journey of Discovery in Asia's Forbidden Wilderness (2001). Galdikas has received numerous awards for her work, including the Order of Canada in 1996 and the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement in 2000. She is currently 75 years old and has an estimated net worth of $2 million.
