Bob Backlund is an American professional wrestler and actor. He is best known for his two stints in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE), the first between 1977 and 1983, and the second between 1992 and 1997. He is a two-time WWF Champion and a one-time WWF Intercontinental Champion. Backlund was born in Princeton, Minnesota, and grew up on a farm in Waldorf, Minnesota. He attended Waldorf High School, where he was a standout in amateur wrestling, football, and track and field. He then attended North Dakota State University, where he won two NCAA Division II championships in 1971 and 1972. Backlund made his professional wrestling debut in 1973, and soon began competing in the American Wrestling Association (AWA). He won the AWA World Heavyweight Championship in 1974, and held it until 1977. He then joined the WWF, where he won the WWF Championship in 1978. He held the title for nearly six years, before losing it to The Iron Sheik in 1983. Backlund returned to the WWF in 1992, and won the WWF Intercontinental Championship in 1994. He retired from professional wrestling in 1997. Since retiring from wrestling, Backlund has made occasional appearances in the WWF/WWE, and has also appeared in several films and television shows. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013.
