He was best known for his work as a sports writer for the Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. He was also a columnist for the San Francisco Examiner and the San Francisco News. Hunter was a prolific writer, having written more than 20 books, including biographies of sports figures such as Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, and Bill Russell. He also wrote several books on the history of baseball, including The Summer Game and The National Pastime. Hunter was a member of the Baseball Writers' Association of America and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008. He was also a recipient of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award, which is given annually to a baseball writer who has made a significant contribution to the game. At the time of his death in 2009, Hunter was estimated to have a net worth of $2 million.
