Bob Samaras was born in 1927 in the United States. He is a former American football coach who served as the head coach of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers from 1965 to 1972. He was also the head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 1973 to 1974. Samaras was a three-sport athlete at the University of Pittsburgh, playing football, basketball, and baseball. He was a member of the Panthers' 1950 national championship football team. Samaras began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh in 1951. He was promoted to head coach in 1965 and led the Panthers to a record of 44-25-3 in eight seasons. He was named the AFCA Coach of the Year in 1969. In 1973, Samaras was hired as the head coach of the San Diego Chargers. He led the Chargers to a record of 8-24 in two seasons before being fired in 1975. Samaras was inducted into the University of Pittsburgh Hall of Fame in 1975. He was also inducted into the San Diego Chargers Hall of Fame in 1994. Samaras is 96 years old as of 2021.
