He is best known for his work on the development of the CubeSat, a type of miniaturized satellite for space research. He was born on November 27, 1927 in Blackfoot, Idaho. Twiggs attended the University of Idaho, where he earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1950. He then went on to earn a master's degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1952. Twiggs began his career as an engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. He then moved to Stanford University, where he worked as a professor of electrical engineering from 1959 to 1994. Twiggs is credited with the development of the CubeSat, a type of miniaturized satellite for space research. He developed the CubeSat with his colleague, Professor Jordi Puig-Suari, in 1999. The CubeSat has since become a popular platform for space research and exploration. Twiggs is also credited with the development of the first amateur radio satellite, OSCAR-1, which was launched in 1961. He was also involved in the development of the first solar-powered satellite, OSCAR-7, which was launched in 1974. Twiggs is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). In 2019, Twiggs designed and proposed another smaller, simpler satellite form factor called ThinSat which could enable high school students to design and build satellites.

1985

From 1985 to 1994, Twiggs was the director of the Weber State University Center for Aerospace Technology. He served as a consulting professor in the Stanford University Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics from 1994 to 2008. At Stanford, he established the Space Systems Development Laboratory. Bob Twiggs became a professor at Morehead State University in 2009 in an effort to push the PocketQube standard leveraging the University's large aperture (21m) space tracking system, and to help develop a space economy in the state of Kentucky.
