Gibson was born in London, England, on 22 September 1944. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began his career as a theatre director. He then moved into television, directing episodes of shows such as The Sweeney, Minder, and The Professionals. Gibson made his feature film debut with Breaking Glass in 1980. The film was a critical and commercial success, and earned Gibson a BAFTA nomination for Best Direction. He followed this up with The Bounty (1984), starring Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins, and What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), starring Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio.
