He is best known for directing the films Breaker Morant (1980), Tender Mercies (1983), Driving Miss Daisy (1989), and Mao's Last Dancer (2009). Beresford was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on 16 August 1940. He attended the University of Sydney, where he studied law and economics. He began his career in the film industry in the late 1960s, working as an assistant director on films such as The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (1972) and Don's Party (1976). Beresford's first feature film as a director was The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (1972). He went on to direct a number of critically acclaimed films, including Breaker Morant (1980), Tender Mercies (1983), Driving Miss Daisy (1989), and Mao's Last Dancer (2009). Beresford has been nominated for two Academy Awards, for Best Director for Tender Mercies (1983) and Best Picture for Driving Miss Daisy (1989). He has also been nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Director for Tender Mercies (1983) and Best Motion Picture – Drama for Driving Miss Daisy (1989).
