Bruno Bettelheim was an Austrian-born American child psychologist and writer. He was born on August 28, 1903 in Vienna, Austria. He was best known for his work in the field of child psychology, particularly his theories on the psychological development of children. He was also a prolific writer, publishing numerous books and articles on the subject. Bettelheim studied at the University of Vienna, where he earned a doctorate in philosophy in 1929. He then moved to the United States, where he taught at the University of Chicago and the University of California, Berkeley. He was a professor at the University of Chicago from 1944 to 1973. Bettelheim was a controversial figure in the field of child psychology. His theories on the psychological development of children were often criticized by other psychologists. He was also criticized for his use of psychoanalytic techniques in his work with children. Bettelheim was the author of several books, including The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales (1976), The Empty Fortress: Infantile Autism and the Birth of the Self (1967), and A Good Enough Parent: A Book on Child-Rearing (1987). Bettelheim died on March 13, 1990 in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was 86 years old.
