Cassam Moollan was a Mauritian politician and trade unionist. He was the leader of the Mauritian Labour Party and served as the Prime Minister of Mauritius from 1982 to 1983. Moollan was born in Port Louis, Mauritius, on 26 February 1927. He was educated at the Royal College of Port Louis and the University of London. He worked as a teacher before entering politics. Moollan was a founding member of the Mauritian Labour Party in 1959 and was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1967. He served as Minister of Education from 1967 to 1969 and Minister of Labour from 1969 to 1982. In 1982, he became Prime Minister of Mauritius, a position he held until 1983. Moollan was a strong advocate for the rights of workers and was instrumental in the passage of the Labour Relations Act of 1982, which provided for the recognition of trade unions and collective bargaining. He also worked to improve the living conditions of the poor and to promote economic development. Moollan died on 15 April 2010 at the age of 83. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
