She is the author of five books of poetry, two novels, and a collection of short stories. She has also edited several anthologies of Canadian literature. Hunter is a professor of English at the University of Winnipeg, where she teaches creative writing and Canadian literature. She is also a critic and has written reviews for the Winnipeg Free Press and the Globe and Mail. Hunter has won numerous awards for her writing, including the Governor General's Award for Poetry, the Pat Lowther Award, and the Manitoba Book Award.
