Cecil Day-Lewis was an Irish poet and novelist who was appointed Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom in 1968. He was born in Ballintubber, County Roscommon, Ireland, on April 27, 1904. He was the son of Frank Day-Lewis, a Church of Ireland clergyman, and Kathleen Blake Squires. He was educated at Sherborne School and Wadham College, Oxford, where he read Classics. Day-Lewis began writing poetry while at Oxford, and his first collection, Beechen Vigil, was published in 1925. He went on to publish several more collections of poetry, including The Magnetic Mountain (1935), The Whispering Roots (1940), and The Sun in the Sands (1946). He also wrote several novels, including The Otterbury Incident (1948) and The Horse in the Furrow (1949). Day-Lewis was appointed Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom in 1968, and he held the post until his death in 1972. He was also awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1956. He was married to the novelist Mary King, and they had two sons, the actor Daniel Day-Lewis and the writer Sean Day-Lewis.
