He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and studied at the Manhattan School of Music and the New School for Social Research. Palestine has composed works for a variety of instruments, including piano, organ, synthesizer, and voice. He has also created installations and performances that incorporate elements of ritual and theater. His works often explore the relationship between sound and space, and he has collaborated with numerous artists, including Tony Conrad, La Monte Young, and Rhys Chatham. Palestine has released numerous recordings, including Strumming Music (1974), Schlingen-Blängen (1975), and All the King's Horses (1977). He has also written several books, including Charlemagne Palestine's Book of Sound (1984) and Charlemagne Palestine's Book of Music (1985). Palestine has received numerous awards and honors, including the Prix Ars Electronica in 2000 and the Golden Nica in 2003. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Huddersfield and the University of Leuven.
