Cherry Jones is an American actress who has been active in the entertainment industry since the 1980s. She is best known for her roles in the films The Horse Whisperer, Signs, and The Village, as well as her Emmy Award-winning performance as President Allison Taylor on the television series 24.
Born on November 21, 1956 in Paris, Tennessee, Jones was raised in nearby South Fulton. She attended the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978. She then attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1983.
Jones made her professional stage debut in 1983 in the off-Broadway production of The Baltimore Waltz. She went on to appear in numerous Broadway and off-Broadway productions, including The Heiress, The Sisters Rosensweig, and Doubt. She won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her performance in the 1995 revival of The Heiress.
Jones made her film debut in the 1998 drama The Horse Whisperer. She went on to appear in the films Signs, The Village, and The Perfect Storm, as well as the television series 24, for which she won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2009.
In addition to her acting career, Jones is an advocate for LGBT rights and has served as a board member of the Human Rights Campaign since 2009. She is also a member of the Council of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
