Chien-Shiung Wu was a Chinese-American physicist who made significant contributions to the field of nuclear physics. She was born on May 29, 1912 in Liuhe, Taicang, Suzhou, China. She was the daughter of a wealthy family and was educated in China, where she earned her bachelor's degree in 1934. She then moved to the United States to pursue her graduate studies, earning her master's degree in 1936 and her doctorate in 1940. Wu's research focused on the properties of beta decay, a type of radioactive decay. She is best known for her work on the "Wu experiment," which disproved the law of conservation of parity, a fundamental law of physics. This work earned her the 1957 Wolf Prize in Physics, making her the first woman to receive the award. In addition to her research, Wu was an advocate for women in science. She was a founding member of the National Organization for Women and served as president of the American Physical Society in 1975. She was also the first female professor of physics at Princeton University. Wu died on February 16, 1997 at the age of 84. She was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2020.
