Chingiz Aitmatov was a Soviet and Kyrgyz author who wrote in both Russian and Kyrgyz. He is best known for his novels and short stories, which combine realism with fantasy and often focus on the themes of love, loss, and human suffering. He was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1983 and the State Prize of the USSR in 1989. He was also a member of the Soviet Writers' Union and the Kyrgyz Writers' Union. Chingiz Aitmatov was born on 12 December 1928 in Sheker, Kyrgyz SSR, USSR. He was the son of Torekul Aitmatov, a Kyrgyz civil servant, and his wife, Chingiz Aitmatova, a teacher. He studied at the Kyrgyz State University and the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute in Moscow. Chingiz Aitmatov's first novel, The White Ship, was published in 1958 and was an immediate success. He went on to write several more novels and short stories, including The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years (1980), The Scaffold (1985), and The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years (1989). He also wrote several plays and screenplays, including The White Ship (1962) and The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years (1989). Chingiz Aitmatov died on 10 June 2008 in Nuremberg, Germany, at the age of 79. He was buried in his hometown of Sheker.

In 1937, while attending the Institute for Red Professorship in Moscow, Torekul was arrested and executed on charges of anti-Soviet bourgeois nationalism. Young Aitmatov was brought up by a single mother. He attended the Russian school, then Kyrgyz Agricultural Institute in Frunze, but changed from the study of livestock to the study of literature at the Gorky Literature Institute in Moscow.
