Lanier started her acting career in 2009 by starring in a movie called The Effects of Tragedy as Lisa. In 2012, she had joined the cast of Army Wives in the recurring role of Penny. In 2014, she guest-starred in an episode of NCIS as Emma Carter and appeared in a film, North Blvd, as Young Elaine. In 2015, she appeared in two episodes of General Hospital as Young Patricia Spencer for the 52nd anniversary storyline. Lanier dished about her Young Patricia Spencer audition being very secretive, she had her part marked as "Girl No.2" which made her think the role was a background one, but to her surprise after she read the character description, she was impressed having a major change of heart and decided to go for it after her boyfriend convinced her to. In the same year, she guest-starred in Stalker as Sage. General Hospital were planning to cast another actress to portray the role of Nelle Benson, since Lanier was busy with another TV show (Kingdom) at that time, but Laura Wright and Frank Valentini were adamant that if anyone should be playing Nelle it should be Lanier, so the storyline was put on hold for her. In 2016, she returned to General Hospital, but this time in a brand new contract role of Nelle Hayes. She debuted on August 8, 2016. In November 2016, she had booked an independent film, Gorman, also titled Quail Lake, where she plays the lead role of Brittany. Lanier reprised her General Hospital role briefly in October 2018. She reprised the role of Nelle Benson the week of June 10, 2019, on General Hospital.
