Chris Blackhurst attended the University of Manchester, where he studied English and History. After graduating, he began his career in journalism at the Manchester Evening News. He then moved to London to work for the Financial Times, where he was the City Editor for seven years. In 2006, Chris Blackhurst was appointed editor of The Independent. He was the first non-Murdoch editor of the newspaper since its launch in 1986. He was also the first editor of the newspaper to be appointed from outside the Murdoch family. In 2012, Chris Blackhurst was appointed editor of the Evening Standard. He was the first editor of the newspaper to be appointed from outside the Lebedev family.
