Hansen attended Michigan State University, where he earned a degree in broadcast journalism. After college, he worked as a reporter for WILX-TV in Lansing, Michigan, and then for WDIV-TV in Detroit. In 1993, he joined NBC News, where he worked as a correspondent for Dateline NBC. Hansen has been married to Mary Joan Hansen since 1983. They have two children, a son and a daughter.
