He has released over 20 albums and has collaborated with a variety of artists, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tycho, and Taylor Deupree. Willits was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and grew up in the Midwest. He began playing guitar at the age of 12 and was heavily influenced by the music of the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin. He attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he studied classical guitar and composition. Willits moved to San Francisco in 2000 and began to focus on electronic music production. He released his first solo album, Opening, in 2002. Since then, he has released a variety of albums, including Surf Boundaries (2008), Tiger Flower Circle Sun (2010), and Orange (2013). He has also collaborated with a variety of artists, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tycho, and Taylor Deupree. Willits has also released a number of visual albums, including the critically acclaimed Edge of Sky (2015). He has also composed music for film and television, including the Netflix series Sense8. Willits currently lives in San Francisco, California. He is married and has two children.
