Chuck Hagel is an American politician and former United States Secretary of Defense. He served as the 24th United States Secretary of Defense from 2013 to 2015. He was a United States Senator from Nebraska from 1997 to 2009. He is a member of the Republican Party. Hagel was born in North Platte, Nebraska, the son of Charles Dean Hagel and Betty Jean (née Hynes). He graduated from St. Bonaventure High School in Columbus, Nebraska, in 1964. He attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1971. Hagel served in the Vietnam War, where he was awarded two Purple Hearts. After his discharge, he worked as a radio and television analyst and as an adjunct professor. He was first elected to the United States Senate in 1996, and was re-elected in 2002. In January 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Hagel to be the 24th United States Secretary of Defense. He was confirmed by the Senate on February 26, 2013, and was sworn in on February 27. Hagel is married to Lilibet Ziller, and they have two children. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
