Cicely Berry is a British theatre director, voice coach, and author. She is best known for her work as the Voice Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) from 1962 to 1991. She is also the author of the book Voice and the Actor, which is considered a classic in the field of voice training. Berry was born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England, and attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. After graduating, she worked as a stage manager at the Royal Court Theatre in London. In 1962, she was appointed Voice Director of the RSC, a position she held until 1991. Berry has written several books on voice training, including Voice and the Actor, Freeing the Natural Voice, and The Actor and the Text. She has also written a book on Shakespeare's language, Shakespeare's Words. Berry has been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Warwick, the University of Birmingham, and the University of Exeter. She was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2011 New Year Honours for services to drama.
