Cicely Saunders is a British nurse, social worker, and physician who is best known for her pioneering work in the field of palliative care. She was born on 22 June 1918 in Barnet, United Kingdom. She was educated at St. Christopher's School in Letchworth, Hertfordshire, and then at St. Anne's College, Oxford, where she studied philosophy, politics, and economics. Saunders began her career as a nurse in 1941, and in 1948 she became a social worker. In 1953, she began her medical studies at St. Thomas' Hospital Medical School in London, and in 1957 she became a doctor. In 1967, Saunders founded St. Christopher's Hospice in London, the first modern hospice in the world. She was the first to recognize the importance of providing physical, psychological, and spiritual care to terminally ill patients. She also developed the concept of the "total pain" of terminal illness, which includes physical, psychological, social, and spiritual suffering. Saunders was awarded the Order of Merit in 1985 and was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1991. She has received numerous awards and honorary degrees, including the Templeton Prize in 2005.
