Haug studied literature and philosophy at the University of Oslo, and has worked as a journalist for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) and the newspaper Aftenposten. She has also written for several magazines and newspapers. Haug has written several novels, including "The Summer of the White Cat" (1996), "The House of the Dead" (1998), and "The Book of the Dead" (2000). She has also written several short stories, including "The Girl Who Loved the Wind" (2003) and "The Boy Who Could Fly" (2005). Haug has won several awards for her writing, including the Norwegian Critics Prize for Literature in 1996 and the Norwegian Booksellers' Prize in 1998. Haug is currently living in Oslo, Norway. She is married and has two children.
