He is best known for his roles in the films The Great Gatsby (1974), The Towering Inferno (1974), and The Sting (1973). Carter was born on November 23, 1922 in Danville, Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he studied theater and acting. After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. Carter's first major role was in the film The Great Gatsby (1974), in which he played the role of Tom Buchanan. He then went on to appear in The Towering Inferno (1974), The Sting (1973), and The Longest Yard (1974). He also had a recurring role in the television series The Waltons (1972-1981). Carter has been married twice, first to actress Joanna Moore from 1956 to 1965, and then to actress and singer Della Reese from 1967 to 1969. He has two children from his first marriage. Carter is now retired from acting and lives in Los Angeles. He is 99 years old.
