Cole Swensen is an American poet, translator, and professor. She was born on October 22, 1955 in Kentfield, California. She is the author of thirteen books of poetry, including Goest, The Glass Age, and Try. She has also translated numerous works from French, including works by Francis Ponge, Yves Bonnefoy, and Philippe Jaccottet. Swensen attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned her B.A. in 1977 and her M.A. in 1979. She then attended the University of Iowa, where she earned her M.F.A. in 1981. Swensen has taught at the University of Iowa, the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Brown University, where she is currently a professor of Literary Arts. She has also held residencies at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Davis, and the University of California, Santa Barbara. Swensen is the recipient of numerous awards, including the National Poetry Series, the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and the Guggenheim Fellowship.
