Colin Low is a Canadian filmmaker and producer who has been active in the film industry since the 1950s. He is best known for his work on the National Film Board of Canada's (NFB) documentary series, The World in Action. Low has won numerous awards for his work, including an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for his film, The Man Who Skied Down Everest. Low was born in Cardston, Alberta, Canada on July 24, 1926. He attended the University of Alberta, where he studied engineering. After graduating, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a navigator during World War II. After the war, he returned to Canada and began working in the film industry. Low's first major project was the NFB's The World in Action series, which he produced and directed from 1956 to 1965. The series was a groundbreaking documentary series that explored a variety of topics, including science, politics, and culture. Low's work on the series earned him an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for his film, The Man Who Skied Down Everest. Low has also worked on a number of other projects, including the feature films The Far Shore (1976) and The Grey Fox (1982). He has also produced and directed a number of short films, including the award-winning short film, The Cat Came Back (1988). Low has been recognized for his work with numerous awards, including the Order of Canada, the Governor General's Award, and the Canadian Film and Television Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. At the age of 90, Low is still actively involved in the film industry. He continues to produce and direct films, and is currently working on a feature-length documentary about the life of Canadian artist, Emily Carr.
