Colin Young (film educator) is a film educator and historian who has been teaching film studies for over 50 years. He is a professor emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin, where he taught film studies from 1967 to 1997. He is the author of several books on film, including The Cinema of Robert Altman, The Films of Robert Altman, and The Films of John Sayles. Young was born in Texas in 1927 and grew up in the small town of San Marcos. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1949. He then went on to earn a master's degree in English from the University of Texas at Austin in 1951. Young began his career in film in the 1950s, working as a film editor and assistant director on several low-budget films. He then moved into teaching, first at the University of Texas at Austin and then at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has taught film studies at both universities for over 50 years. Young has written extensively on film, including books on Robert Altman, John Sayles, and other filmmakers. He has also written several books on film history, including The American Cinema: Directors and Directions 1929-1968 and The American Cinema: Directors and Directions 1969-1984. Young is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Directors Guild of America. He has been honored with several awards, including the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. He is also a recipient of the Texas Film Hall of Fame Award.

As well as the BAFTA Academy Fellowship Award he received in 1993, he received an OBE and CBE from the British government and the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French government.

1992

Young left the school in 1992 and founded Ateliers du Cinema Europeen in Paris, to train European film producers.

1970

In 1970 when the decision was made to establish a national film school in the UK in order to revitalise the British film industry, Young was invited to apply to become the founding director, a post which he took up in 1971. He worked there for more than two decades, at a time when the school produced alumni including Bill Forsyth, Terence Davies, Julien Temple, Beeban Kidron, and Nick Park.

1966

He was particularly involved in the creation of UCLA's Ethnographic Film Program, launched in 1966 inspired by the ideas of Harold Garfinkel, intending to bring film and anthropology together.

1965

At UCLA, Young moved from student to teacher, becoming chairman of the School of Theater, Film and Television in 1965. Graduates during his tenure included Francis Ford Coppola, Paul Schrader, John Milius, Haskell Wexler, Barry Levinson and Lawrence Kasdan. He had a policy of employing filmmakers who were in between jobs to teach: although as David MacDougall said some of them "couldn't teach", despite that "they were infected with the virus of cinema and we caught it from them".

Colin Young CBE (5 April 1927 – 27 November 2021) was a British film educator, chairman of the School of Theater, Film and Television at UCLA, founder of the film program at Rice University, Houston, Texas, and the first director of the British National Film and Television School. He was awarded a BAFTA Academy Fellowship Award, the highest honor of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, in 1993.

Young was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 5 April 1927. He graduated from the University of St Andrews with a degree in Philosophy and Morals. He worked in Scotland as a film journalist before going to California to study film at UCLA, where he earned a MFA degree.
